“Once and for all I have promised by my holy name:
I will never lie to David.
He will always have descendants,
and I will watch over his kingdom as long as the sun shines.
It will be as permanent as the moon,
that faithful witness in the sky.” [Psalm 89 v. 35-37]
The Promise of God is one fulfilled many hundreds of years after it was made, despite what it may have looked like after the defeat of Israel and the loss of her Kings. David’s line continued and with the birth of Jesus into the family of Joseph a promise was continued. Even though the Kingship had fallen and was no more, the family continued and were still under the protection and support of God, and, more importantly they still had a place in God’s Plan for the world.
It is a good lesson for us to remember that no matter what, the Lord keeps His Promises and He cares for His people even though it might not seem so at the time. Sometimes He moves in ways we can never understand and in a timing that might seem too slow for us. Yet we know that whatever God does, it is for a purpose and often it is in hindsight that we realise just how great and loving our God is in His Care.
I love the last two lines of the Psalm [v.37] “ It will be as permanent as the moon, that faithful witness in the sky.” How beautiful is that thought, every one of us can look at the moon and find in its true beauty when it sits like a bright globe hanging in the deep blue sky. The sun and moon are faithful witnesses in heaven of the wisdom, power, and goodness of the Creator, and shall continue while time lasts, which they are the measurers of. The constant movement of the Sun and the Moon mark out the time of our lives, always there and so taken for granted.
It is wonderful that God’s Love is as constant and continuous, and it is also comforting to know that God is always with us. In a way we take for granted it is so unobtrusive. Yet His Love for us is so great and so powerful just as the Sun which looks beautiful and far-off yet it is a powerful ball of burning gas and something we cannot even think of getting near. We cannot even look at it directly without harming our eyes. It is a similar situation with God, much more powerful than we can contemplate, no-one has seen His face directly. Even Moses who talked to and walked with God so closely was not allowed because as God told him, “I will not let you see my face, because no one can see me and stay alive” [Exodus 33 : 20].
The Love of God is benevolent and though untouchable is available for us all, He is there for everyone in the world whether they believe in Him or not. He is always approachable even if someone finds themselves praying for the first time later in life. No-one is ever turned away and each relationship with God is personal and He remains as constant as the Sun and the Moon, the faithful witnesses in the sky.
LET US PRAY
The Heavens reflect Your Glory and tell of Your Creative Power.
The beauty of the sky in all its different colours marks the passing of time,
The perfect shifting shape of the moon marking the passing of months
The bright sun warming and cheering our lives as we behold its splendour.
All are constant reminders of Your Presence and from these we take heart
As we watch their progress and from that are given a sense of Your Continuing Presence.
We thank You for Your Comforting, Caring Love which follows each one of us
Throughout all of our lives.
We ask in Jesus Name.
